Can Foreign Students Apply for NSFAS? Scholarship Programme 2021

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a government run bursary scheme for students, which receives its funding budget from the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and also reports to the DHET. NSFAS provides bursaries to students who meet their requirements and are studying at public universities or Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges in South Africa.

 

There are certain criteria that need to be met in order to be approved for funding. The first requirement is that you need to be a South African citizen.

The other requirements are:

  • Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum.
  • A person with a disability and the combined household income of no more than R600 000 per annum.
  • Students who started studying before 2018 whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum.

 

So, if you are an foreign student, you cannot be approved for NSFAS funding. Other categories who will not qualify for NSFAS funding incude:

  • Foreign students (any student who is not a South African citizen).
  • Students that have completed a previous qualification.
  • Students with a combined household income of more than R350 000 per annum.
  • Students who have already applied, qualified and received funding. They are automatically funded for the duration of their studies provided they pass their modules and meet the academic requirements.
