The SASSA Grants are to be Increased is currently looking to fund undergraduates looking for scholarships.

There is good news and bad news regarding social grants. Finance Minister, Tito Mboweni, has announced that social grants will be increased. They will increase between 1.0% and 3.4%. But sadly, the social relief of distress grant is due to come to an end in April.

Tito Mboweni announced the following increases to social grants:

  • R30 increase for the old age to R1890
  • R30 increase for the disability grant to R1890
  • R30 increase for the care dependency grants to R1890
  • R30 increase in the war veterans grant to R1910
  • R15 increase in the child support grant to R460
  • R10 increase for the foster care grant to R1050

The government expects to see a decrease of 2.2% in social grants over the next three years.

The 2021 Budget Review report stated that the total social grants are reduced by R5.8 billion in 2021/22, R10.7 billion in 2022/23 and R19.5 billion in 2023/24. All grant values will increase by less than inflation.

300 000 more people are expected to benefit from social grants over this period. The number of social grant beneficiaries is anticipated to reach 9 million by 2022/23.

Provinces will also receive R3.5 billion from the Department of Social Development through the early childhood development grant to improve access to quality early childhood development services.

The Minister also announced that R678.3 million is earmarked for provincial departments of social development and basic education to continue rolling out free sanitary products for learners from low-income households.

The National Youth Development Agency will receive R1.4 billion for its operations and youth employment support programmes.

Over the medium term, the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities is allocated R15 million to establish and operationalise a national council for gender-based violence and femicide.
