In delivering ‘Social Science that makes a difference,’ the Research Programmes of the Human Sciences Research Council initiate and undertake policy-oriented research projects and programmes from its offices in Cape Town, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Port Elizabeth, and Pretoria. Its public-purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008.

The Centre for Community Based Research (CCBR) exists within the Division of Human and Social Capabilities. The mission of the CCBR is to understand, identify and improve community wellbeing by exploring, describing, and addressing health, education, and quality of life through novel mixed methods approaches that combines multidisciplinary capacities, and to serve as a hub for knowledge generation, capacity building and training. Through engagement and advocacy for community-informed approaches, the CCBR is a champion for this work within the Division and across the HSRC. The CCBR currently have staff in both Durban and Pietermaritzburg with plans to grow activities and capacity beyond the borders of the Sweetwaters.

 

Job Title: Laboratory Technician

Job Summary:
The CCBR is looking for a suitably qualified person to take on the duties of Laboratory Technician to analyze, interpret and produce participant results from human specimens and to implement and maintain the quality management system for the laboratory. The successful candidate will primarily work on a multi-year HIV prevention trial. The Laboratory Technician will report to the Project Director and work closely with the senior management team, cross project units, project team and site support staff to successfully implement their role. This position is offered on a 12month contract.

Analyze, interpret, and produce participant results:
•Receive labeled and captured samples from Data Capturer
•Check and verify that details on tubes and labels correspond
•Check the suitability of samples to be analyzed – no clots, not haemolysed
•Perform instrument and manual tests for Hematology
•Perform testing in Chemistry, Serology, and Molecular PCR
•Analyze and interpret the results
•Capture manual test results on a laboratory information system
•Print the test results and correlate data

Quality assurance and control:
•Monitor professional body registrations and CPD
•Perform internal and external quality control in conjunction with colleagues
•Perform internal audits
•Report all non-conformances within the QMS to management
•Conform to accreditation requirements
•Conduct maintenance and calibration of equipment
•Review and implement changes to SOPs in order to ensure the laboratory is constantly able to provide high quality, cost-effective and correct results

Laboratory administration:
•Monitor and control stock levels and advise if goods have to be ordered
•Monitor and control workflows and turnaround times
•Perform relevant administration i.e. filing, copying, emailing, etc.
•Report any quality control issues to laboratory management
•Demonstrate cost consciousness and assists in meeting budgetary targets
•Monitor equipment calibration and maintenance to ensure accurate and reliable results
•Assist with training on new SOP’s
Receiving and processing of samples (When required)
•Assist in receiving when necessary, verify if the information on the sample is as the laboratory requisition form
•Decide following the SOP whether specimens are suitable for analysis and processing
•Analysis of specimen

Requirements:
•National Diploma in Medical Technology or equivalent
•Discipline-specific: Clinical Pathology
•Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) registration as a medical technologist in the listed disciplines
•Minimum 2 years of experience as a Medical Technologist
Preference will be given to candidates who have:
•Certification in good clinical laboratory practice (GCLP) and basic health and safety
•Attendance of CEU courses
•Exceptional organizational and administration skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office and laboratory systems (e.g. MediTech)
•Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines
•Able to operate in a pathology laboratory where health and safety must be applied at all times
•Work well in a pressurized environment in meeting turnaround times in high volumes
•Liaise and maintain effective working relationships with external laboratories, Clinicians, Couriers, Medical Representatives, equipment suppliers, and Technicians.
