The Africa Institute of South Africa (AISA), within the Human Sciences Research Council, is seeking to appoint an Assistant Data Specialist for its project, “Food and Nutrition Security Survey in South Africa.” The Assistant Data Specialist will be employed for a period of 12 months. Working with the Project Data Manager, the responsibilities of the Assistant Data Specialist include assisting in overseeing the project’s various data systems, organising, storing and analysing data as efficiently as possible and always upholding agreed-upon security standards. The position is based in Pretoria. Experienced university graduates are encouraged to apply.

Job Summary:
•Communicate with principle investigators to determine scope, requirements, deliverables and deadlines;
•Manage IT applications and systems in research data collection setting;
•Ensure data quality control;
•Document technical specifications;
•Co-ordinate with research staff and field supervisors to ensure the accuracy and efficiency of the data collection and data entry tools and processes;
•Run regular data quality assurance checks and maintain data integrity;
•Design databases, create scripts, run basic validation scripts and debugging errors;
•Organize and merge research data from multiple sources;
•Conducting diagnostic tests and evaluating performance metrics;
•Troubleshoot database issues and implementing database recovery procedures and safety protocols;
•Prepare summary statistics, tables and figures for reports;
•Perform other responsibilities as assigned and requested.
Key Requirements:
•At least a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Mathematics or Statistics
•2+ years of research experience
•Excellent understanding of data administration and management functions i.e. Collection, analysis, distribution and curation
•Knowledge of SQL and the underlying database structure of REDCap
•Knowledge of PHP or Java Statistics (SAS, R, SPSS, STATA)
•At least two (2) Programming languages
•Android applications installation and trouble shooting
•Candidates ability to perform the following roles in Research Electronic
.Build REDCap projects and develop REDCap data dictionaries,
.Implement branching logic and calculations and create reports and run REDCap projects
.Troubleshoot issues related to the REDCap installation and functionality.
.Identify bugs and report them to the REDCap developers.
.Participate in the REDCap forums.
•Fluency in English and any of the local languages in South Africa.
•High personal motivation and self-management.
•Accuracy and attention to detail.
•Prior experience with HSRC will be an added advantage.
•Successful applicants will be evaluated during training and over the duration of the project and if any part of this work is not completed to the satisfactory level as required, the appointment will be terminated;
•Availability to work from January 2021 to December 2021; and be available to work over weekends if required.

Project timeline:
The successful candidates will be appointed on project-based contract with specified deliverables and will be required to work a minimum 40-hour week. This work may extend to weekends
